it is teed up to be a debate about big ideas. is mitt romney going to deliver? >> i am sure that part of the reason this video is out there, just the day before, is to give romney the opportunity to, perhaps, reference it when you talk about the role of government, when you talk about the economy, he's got some phrases he likes to use about more people being on welfare and all of that, so i would imagine we'll hear some of that. i actually disagree with something mark said. i think this was very much a play for the base. even our nbc news poll, 23% of people said, that 47% comment made them like mitt romney better. so there are people out there who agree with those comments. >> aren't they locked up already? that's a question -- >> no. because remember we've also seen reuters has had the polling and a lot of polling that show some low-income southern whites are thinking he's too richy rich. what it shows is he's still in trouble with his own base and now, you know, obviously the way the white house is trying to set this up, the president is going to talk about v

mitt romney has never debated a single person in a very long time. so i think we're all looking for fireworks and attacks and back and forth. i think at least the first half of the debate and maybe the entire first debate. remember, this is first of three. the entire first debate could be a little bit of a feeling process where no one takes any big risks getting to know one another in their debate style. i certainly could be proven wrong, but my guess is it's less fireworks than we currently are expecting. >> it's in the capable and experienced hands of jim lahr, and we'll see what happens tonight as well as tonight. the 6:30 release, and tomorrow morning at 6:00 a.m., it is new battleground polls for ohio, virginia, florida. that's going to be very important news as well. the nbc "wall street journal" mariss polls. we saw a narrow iing of the polls initially. that is still very much in play. >> i can't wait. a political junkie's dream with all that polling coming up. i can't help but smile. >> we love to see you smiles. that does it for us for this

mitt romney, you know what he needs to do? he needs to debate himself. we deserve it. i'm joined tonight by nicole lamaro, the director of free clinics. great to have you with us. you're out there doing great work on behalf of the people. what's your response to mitt romney saying that we care for people without insurance because they just go get it at the emergency room? >> well, quite frankly, i was flabbergasted. to think the answer is to go to the emergency room, it's ludicrous. it's used for emergencies. sending the uninsured to an emergency room is absolutely, positively backwards. we want the uninsured to go to doctors to get the primary and preventive care that they need so that they can be productive members of society. sending them to the emergency room when their diseases have exploded is just sentencing them to death. >> romney also mentioned free clinics. can you even begin to address the burden of the uninsured in this country through free clinics? >> well, i can give you -- no. let's be honest. free and charitable clinics are doing the best we can, but l

i think governor romney is a very good debater. there's certainly things you can't teach in debates, and that's in terms of how you attack your opponent. he had his bad moments, i.e., his 10,0$10,000 bet, but he was pretty solid. i remember during the primaries when we were prepping against him, it really wasn't -- he wasn't a candidate we were focused on in terms of being concerned about debating. all that being said, usually the challenger in this circumstance would go in with lower expectations. the problem here is because romney's campaign is in such a terrible position, and it's flailing. everyone is fixated on, is this the moment, the debate that turns things around? the expectations are higher for governor romney, and that is the problem. that's what the campaign and governor romney have put themselves in this position where if they don't do well in the debate, it really is the beginning of the end. >> politico is reporting that mitt romney plans to fact-check obama in the debate. governor romney has been accused of flip-flo
